Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy

During this both procedures a tube will be connected to a fiber optic camera to see the inner lining of rectum and lower part of colon. Colonoscopies are more used than sigmoidoscopy because the doctor can examine both upper and lower parts.

Sigmoidoscopy is again of 2 types flexible and rigid flexible will have a flexible tube while rigid will have a rigid tube. For flexible procedures like biopsy and polypectomy procedures are used. Whereas sigmoidoscopy for surgical procedures is performed.

Preparation for this Procedure

During preparing for this procedure it involves drinking solutions like Mira LAX, laxatives, enemas and after a certain diet procedure will be started and seductive will be given to reduce pain and relax. along with this to get accurate results he will tell you to clear the stool so this preparation involves drinking large amount of cleansing water his should be flowed as it is so we may get good result and some may ask you to avoid some foods for 2 to 3 days like stringy foods and seed foods and some may involve continuation of medication as usual it is important to tell all the prescriptions you used before going to treatment and after. So that you will be aware of allergies and unwanted infections.

How many days it lasts

A flexible sigmoidoscopy will take time for at least 10 to 20 minutes. The colonoscopy procedure will take between 20 and 30 minutes. We should stay in a room to get recovery for 30 minutes to hour to get relief from sedative. You will see some changes in your stomach like pain and passing of gas, can be observed. You can continue your regular food after completion of treatment. Other tests include Stool DNA tests. This test is used to investigate the DNA from an individual's feces test to search the disease. It notices changes in the DNA that happen in polyps and see when a colonoscopy will be finished.

Conclusion

Sigmoidoscopy is good when compared to colonoscopy in certain things like finding and removing precancerous colon polyps in the left side of the colon, where two out of three colon cancers arise whereas mostly colonoscopy is preferred more than sigmoidoscopy but coming to cost it is less invasive.
